The origins of physical education, sport and leisure movement took shape in the neginning years of the second half of 19th century: back then, the region of Jičín was the first of Czech countries of Austria-Hungary where the so-called “Sokol” (Falcon) was formed. Sokol was the most famous physical education and sport movement. Since then, the movement underwent many changes: some were good, some not quite successful. It’s important to say that today; no one would recognize the “old” look and equipment of this P.E. movement when comparing it to the “new and recent one”. But the main idea of this physical education and sport movement remained the same.
Most of all, there choice of sports and games is furthermore richer than before. Then, not only citizens of Jičín but visitors are welcomed as well: no matter if doing some sport professionally or just as “leisure time hobby”. Recently, there are 30 sport clubs registered which provide more than 25 various sport activities. There are two tennis courts, an aqua center and many aerobic lessons and trainings (which take part mainly in school gyms) in Jičín region. Also various and enjoyable actions of old tradition (as “The Bohemian Paradise March with Rumcajs, Manka and Cipísek”, which takes place in March or “St. Nicolaus race on Brady”, which takes place in December) are to be mentioned.
In our humble opinion, these short introductions into Jičín country, history and culture are the best proof of why everyone could enjoy their stay in such lovely place of entertainment, culture and active free time.
