The chateau in Jičín was built after 1608; 12 years later, it caught fire after an explosion, and was seriously damaged. Under Albrecht of Valdštejn, in 1633, it was newly built in the Baroque style.

It is one of the largest early-Baroque chateaux in our country and a significant dominant element of the urban preserve of Jičín.

In the historic interiors you can visit the Lounge of Three Emperors with portraits of leaders - allies who once fought against Napoleon. At present, the chateau is used by the town authority and it is the residence of the District Museum and the Gallery with a permanent exposition of works by artist Radek Pilař.

In the Footsteps of the Baroque

Although the Bohemian Paradise is exceptionally rich in objects of architectural heritage of many different styles and periods, the Baroque period left the most pronounced marks in the expensive constructional enterprises of the aristocracy as well as dozens of churches and chapels built in the period of re-Catholicisation. Numerous examples of civic architecture from the 18th century as well as folk architecture have also been preserved. The landscape and village greens are decorated with chapels, wayside crosses and sculptures by folk artists.
